Time for something a little bit different. Hardy fired this across my line of sight this morning, I don't really know what to make of it, apart from confirming that it is indeed a keeper. Innovative and clever electronica.

"Stand still, pause clocks; we can make the world stop."

I'm not sure that those individual actions will get the desired result, but it's a great tune: upbeat, positive, positive.

Every now and then, something moving and thought-provoking finds its way onto my playlist. A few months ago, I saw New Model Army live and this song just blew me away. In the midst of an amazing gig, full of passion and energy, one song stood out a mile. It left a lasting impression on me, one of those songs that lyrically changes your perception, with a score to match.

"The movers move, the shakers shake, the winners write their history..."

Isn't that just the truth...

I had some dedicated "Me time!" a while back, probably the result of a fracture in my somewhat erratic relationship status, and rather than force my emotions into the constraints of a tweet about the fragility of the human spirit, I had an evening of musical self-indulgence.

If your demand is for beautiful, heavy, melancholic sounds then your are clamoring for “Godspeed you! Black emperor”, my friend.

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain

This is where it all began. I called in to see a friend one lunchtime and heard this track playing on his office sound system. Some music catches your interest; some music makes you think; some music blows your mind; this track melted mine. A song dripping with soul and passion, this is everything the guitar was made for. And on top of it all, it has a title that makes the MTV generation turn up their noses and say "Maggot brain? Ew. No thanks!" What more could you want?

According to legend, George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, asked band-mate Eddie Hazel to imagine he had been told his mother was dead, but then learned that it was not true.

The result was this 10-minute guitar solo for which Hazel is most fondly remembered by many music critics and fans. Clinton soon realized how powerful Hazel's solo was and faded the rest of the band out of the mix so that the focus would be on Hazel's guitar. Critics have described the solo as "an emotional apocalypse of sound."

The entire track was recorded in one take.
